The Central Bureau of Investigation on Monday arrested four senior Income Tax officers, managing director of a real estate firm and a chartered accountant on graft charges.
The agency arrested Kunal Singh, who also holds dual charge of Commissioner and Director (investigation) of Kanpur range, Additional Director (Investigation) Ratan Singh, Assistant Director Uma Kant, Inspector Harish Dhaundiyal, Managing Director of a real estate company, Eldeco, Pankaj Bajaj and chartered accountant Anil Jaiswal in bribery case.
The CBI conducted searches at Kunal Singh’s Hauz Khas house in upmarket South Delhi and seized Rs 30 lakh — which was allegedly given as bribe by Bajaj to settle the tax evasion case, the CBI said in a press release on Monday.
At the same time, the raiding teams also swooped down at various places in Delhi, including at Bajaj’s house in Greater Kailash; Uma Kant’s in Ghaziabad, Jaiswal in Kanpur and Lucknow leading to recovery of huge amount of cash, valuables and incriminating documents, the CBI claimed.
After registering a case, the CBI said the I-T’s Investigation Wing at Kanpur conducted a survey on March 28 on the allegation of tax evasion by the Eldeco group of companies. The senior level officials of the private developer along with the Kanpur-based chartered accountant contacted several officials of I-T Department to settle their matter by illegal means.
The CBI charged that Eldeco paid huge amount of bribe to the I-T officials. The I-T officials, during the inspection of of Bajaj’s lockers, allegedly allowed Bajaj and his family to take away major portion of cash and gold stored in the locker.
Jaiswal is alleged to have been working as a conduit between the accused I-T officials and the private company. The accused were remanded to the CBI custody by the Special CBI judge, Patiala House Courts.
