Bangalore is another Bellary, says Karat

'Builder mafia, in cahoots with politicians, is plundering City’s natural wealth'
Likening Bangalore to Bellary, Communist Party (Marxist) politburo member Brinda Karat on Monday said the real estate mafia, in nexus with politicians and bureaucrats, had plundered the natural wealth of the City.

Addressing a gathering during a discussion on ‘Voters convention’, organised in the backdrop of the Legislative Council elections by Matadarara Jagruthi Vedike at Central College, Karat said Bangaloreans have ensured that the voice of sanity is raised in the Legislative Council.

Batting for Bangalore Graduates Constituency candidate K S Lakshmi, fielded by CPI, CPM and Dalit Sangharsha Samiti, Karat said it was time graduates voted out dominant political forces, which worked under the neo-liberal policy framework. “We should strongly use our vote against corruption,” she said.

“The Bangalore real estate development has become a mafia enterprise rather than a planned development. Bangalore has become a lot like Bellary where there is a flourishing nexus between the real estate mafia, politicians and some bureaucrats.”

She said none of the elected representatives had bothered to address the issues of the workforce of Bangalore. Issues pertaining to their housing, price rise, food security, etc, have not been heard in the Legislative Council, she said. “All dominant political parties in Karnataka are committed to the neo-political framework, letting markets determine our lives. They have a perverted understanding of what India wants,” she said.

Strongly criticising the UPA government’s move to hike petrol prices, Karat said the government was catering to private companies.

“This government will subsidise the rich and cut subsidies for the poor. It only caters to the corporate sector and not the common man. We must challenge this,” she said.Actor and thinker G K Govind Rao said casteism was more prevalent among “graduates” than the illiterate. He said the BJP government had created an Emergency-like situation in the State.

Rao said BJP candidate Ramachandra Gowda, in his four terms as MLC from Bangalore Graduates Constituency, had remained “indifferent” to the needs of the people.

CPM’s Prasanna Kumar said Gowda’s big achievement was that he successfully helped dissolve the Paramashivaiah Committee appointed by the government to submit a report on tackling the drinking water situation.

He said Gowda had betrayed graduates by commercialising medical education.
